character name: Gara

canon: Di[e]ce
Established as having a bad attitude from a young age, Gara is at first glance just about the opposite of what you would consider a "Bishop" or a support class. Clothed almost literally from head to toe in black leather and a ridiculous assortment of knives, Gara comes off at first as intense and intimidating. His personality itself is much the same-- loud, abrasive, opinionated, aggressive, and most of all unapologetic. He says exactly what he thinks with little to no regard for manners or propriety, often spitting out curse words on a dime. While he isn't necessarily deliberately cruel or mean-spirited he tends to come off as such simply due to the fact that he loses his patience easily and rarely bothers to filter himself.
Though for how big he talks and how much he throws his proverbial weight around it's worth it to note that he's not necessarily invincible. He can get easily flustered by people who intimidate or otherwise throw him off, such as when he's rendered absolutely speachless by Karen slapping him in the face. Also in spite of his genuine efforts he tends to drop the ball when it comes to fulfilling his role as Bishop... to the point that it's actually pointed out when he fails to stay by Haruki because he's too busy fighting. In the end he's too headstrong and impulsive to effectively play the support role, but he plays with the hand he was dealt.
He does, however, have a protective streak even outside of the obvious programmed-to-protect-the-King. As a kid he was quick to throw himself between Sion and perceived danger, despite being roughly five years old and having only known Sion for perhaps a day at the most. He exhibits the same sort of concern for his teammate Kirito in later years as well, though Haruki's safety always takes precedence. In addition he's shown to mother hen his team in an aggressive bullying sort of way as well as he nags at Kirito about how much he fails at cooking and how Haruki isn't getting enough nutrition.
That being said, as a Bishop his primary role in the game is to act as support and guide to his King. In addition to his trained fighting skills he also possesses the special Bishop skills of healing and touch-empathy, though he can only heal his King. His relationship with his King is notably different from the way he treats everyone else, which is an obvious result of his pre-programming. While around Haruki he can be unusually gentle, patient, respectful, and even obedient. His devotion to his King leads him to stay at Haruki's side even when Haruki displays psychopathic and suicidal tendencies. Even if it is a programmed predisposition he genuinely cares about Haruki and his well-being, at one point practically begging him to stop being so self destructive because "when you hurt we hurt too".
In the end Gara just accepts his fate as a piece in a messed up murder game. Having been trained for most of his life to not only fight to kill, but to one day think of his closest brother-like figure as an enemy, he's been conditioned to just accept whatever comes to him. Even before he learned of the existence of Di[e]ce he held very little expectations as a child, his only glimpse of hope for a better life with Sion's family having been stamped out immediately by Akikage. That isn't to say that he's depressed about his life, he just doesn't get his hopes up and refuses to dwell long enough on something to let it get to him. Because like he said as a child, crying doesn't help, and if you don't endure you get beaten. That is to say, while this detatchment might not exactly be the healthiest, in the end it's what gives him his strength.
objective: Fighting - Throughout Di[e]ce Gara exhibits a sort of savage glee at fighting, especially when his opponents put up a good fight. In fact his brief "awakening" occurs near the very end of the series when he is challenged by the Queen, the strongest player in the entire game, as he eagerly accepts the challenge (and likely gets his ass kicked because Karen is amazing and no one can beat Karen).
For this reason I believe that fighting is one of the few things that Gara really gets off on. Even outside of Di[e]ce he would be not only willing but on occasion actually raring to get into a good fight. Since he likely already gets an adrenaline high from fighting it only makes since for him to get paid for it as well in the Court system.

And a prose/monologue just in case;
"I will destroy this world."
He never thought he'd hear those words outside of his King's mouth. Yet there they were, smacking him in the face like icey cold water-- a wake up call, maybe. They should have been the final sign, the last straw in the series of crooked proverbial straws that Koutake Haruki kept picking in his slow descent into crazy town. Any normal, reasonable person with even a shred of self respect would figure that the best time to jump ship may possibly be when their King starts talking about wanting to destroy the entire world and everything in it.
So then why was he still here?
Actually that question never even entered his head.
He was still here because Haruki was his King. Sure, he knew his King was crazy-- well off his goddamn rocker in fact, and selfish to boot. His King clearly didn't give a damn about anyone but the other King. The fact that 'destroy the whole world and everyone in it' also meant 'destroy the people standing next to me as my comrades' probably only registered to Haruki as a regrettable necessity and not much more wasn't anything he could change at this point in the game.
And he was fine with that.
There wasn't much use crying over spilled blood, after all. Unlike his crybaby counter part he'd already accepted his fate years ago. This was just the role he'd been handed in life.
The Black Bishop. Born and bred to protect and serve the Black King until death do they part.
It's only sad if you stop long enough to cry about it.

- Apping him straight from canon so he is essentially a computer program that doesn't know he's a computer program who has been made/programmed to participate in a murder game called di[e]ce at the whim of some brocon d-bag.
- Was raised by an abusive family until he was about five years old when Akikage 'adopted' him along with Sion.
- Sion convinced him to attempt escape which was the one brief moment in his life when he had hope for something better than whatever life gave him. Akikage crushed those hopes real quick by surprising them at Sion's mother's house.
- On the same day is told of his role in the game as a "Bishop" and is basically traumatized into accepting it because showing five year olds endless gruesome images of war and their loved ones dying is the best way to get them to do what you want.
- After this he is trained and schooled by Akikage in fighting and other similarily Bishop things, as well as taken to see his King so he can imprint on sight.
- Di[e]ce itself then begins when Gara is 18 and he naturally takes up his role as the Black King's Bishop. He's pretty good at it for a few chapters but overall he still tends to fail in classic Bishop fashion.
- His King eventually goes completely crazy but Gara still serves him loyally til the end, even when his King states that he wants to destroy their entire world and everyone in it. Healthy pre-programmed attachments all around in Di[e]ce.
- In the end everyone gets memory wiped and reset to live 'normal' lives as 'normal' human beings without any involvement in Di[e]ce but that's barely relevant here because I'm apping him from bad end.
